Focus Assist Light

It’s interesting to note that previously, the Focus Assist Light (FL) was lumped into the Flash setting. Having it moved to Settings is more appropriate because it’s something that we usually don’t touch & that’s where you’d usually find in digicam & DSLR.

The purpose of the FL is to illuminate the target to allow the AF system to find an edge to focus on. This is especially important in lowlight/no light situations where the AF has trouble focusing & Manual Focus is impossible as well. It also allow metering of the scene so the image processor can set Shutter Speed & White Balance.

There are 3 modes as well:

  1. Set by Flash – Follows the Flash mode exactly
  2. Auto – Based on ambient light
  3. Off – Never switched ON

Based on my experience, leaving it at Auto all the time is the best.
